Nothing frustrates a client more than removing floor protection film and finding sticky adhesive residue all over their brand-new marble floor. Here’s how to prevent it — and fix it if it happens.
What Causes Residue?
- Exceeding application time: Every film has a rated application period. Leaving it longer causes the adhesive to break down.
- Heat exposure: Direct sunlight or radiant heat accelerates adhesive degradation.
- Wrong product for the surface: Films designed for hard surfaces can leave residue on porous materials like unfinished wood or natural stone.
Prevention
Match the product to the surface and respect the rated application period. Our carpet film is rated for 60 days, hard surface film for 45 days, and seam tape for 90 days. These ratings include a safety margin — but don’t push it.
Removal Methods (If It Happens)
- On hard surfaces: Apply isopropyl alcohol (70%) with a soft cloth. Let it sit 2 minutes, then wipe clean.
- On natural stone: Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Never use acidic cleaners on marble or limestone.
- On carpet: Use a carpet-safe adhesive remover or warm soapy water with gentle agitation.
